The significant improvement in Hanson's safety performance was achieved using an integrated framework which addressed the core issues of Leadership, Employee Engagement and Safety Systems. The key things that made a difference to their safety performance include:

• Creating leadership alignment and commitment to Zero Harm
• Providing opportunities for visible demonstration of Safety Leadership through co-facilitation of workshops and leaders being responsible for on-site coaching and safety meetings
• Rapid cascade of Zero Harm workshops across all levels and sites across the state
• Introducing new safety systems to capture safety observations and near misses
• Improvement of induction processes and the frequency and quality of site safety meetings
• Ongoing safety coaching for managers.






Results:

Hanson achieved an extraordinary 64% decrease in their Significant Injury Frequency rate over a 12 month period. As a direct result of their improved safety performance, the cost of their Workers Compensation insurance is now 50% of their industry average. They were also shortlisted for the Queensland WorkSafe Safety Award in 2008.
